Chris Martland was born in Westchester County, New York, in 1982. He studied piano starting at 4 years of age under a strict Russian teacher who espoused the Suzuki Method. He started playing acoustic and electric guitar at age 12, and eventually went on to learn the synthesizer, drums, and bass.
Martland received his undergraduate degree in music business from Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. Upon graduating, he earned his master's degree in Human Resource Development from the University of Tennessee. While at Belmont and UT, he competed in the decathlon, earning a world ranking in 2004 and 2005.
Martland currently resides in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he continues to compose and throw the javelin.
