Anthony Penrose ... promoting a biography of his mother photographer Lee Miller.But for Antony Penrose, The Lives of Lee Miller became a process of discovery as he found that this woman with the "upfront persona who blasted her way through life had, behind all that, a number of secret, locked compartments".She never spoke of her own work, for instance, and accumulated photographs, articles, correspondence and "letters of unrequited love from all around the globe" in huge bundles which, when big enough, she simply tied together with brown paper and string and stored in a collection of cardboard boxes and trunks.This "Pandora's box", opened and sorted only after her death from cancer in 1977, started Penrose on the "Lee Miller cottage industry".
