Gonzalez caused an international custody battle earlier this year when he escaped from Cuba with his mother in a small boat and arrived in Florida safely after his mother died along the way and Miami relatives refused to release him to his Cuban father. US Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) agents recently stormed the relatives' home in Miami to retrieve Gonzalez and then reunited the boy with his natural father.
