Second officer Valtteri Salokannel makes an entry in the ships logbook on the bridge of the icebreaker Polaris in the waters off Tornio, northern Finland, on 5 February, 2019. - A state-of-the-art icebreaker in the highly polluted Baltic sea, close to the Arctic, will now begin operating without diesel thanks to a new gas terminal which can supply it with cleaner fuel. The 128 million euro ($145m) vessel is tasked with keeping shipping lanes open for up to six months of the year, allowing a constant stream of cargo ships carrying steel, paper products and chemicals into and out of the ports serving northern Finland as well as neighbouring Sweden.
