Yazidis in Iraqi Kurdistan
DOHUK, REGIONAL GOVERNMENT OF KURDISTAN, IRAQ - 2016: View of Kabarto refugee camp, now home to many of the Yazidi forced to flee the city of Sinjar, taken by ISIS on August 3rd, 2014, then subsequently liberated by Kurdish forces on November 13th, 2015, supported by the International Coalition. Opened in November 2014, the camp now provides refuge for nearly 15,000 people. The Yazidis of Kurdish ethnic origin are a religious community who practice Yazidism, one of the oldest monotheistic religion in the world with similarities in somes ritual with Zoroastrianism, Hinduism, Judaism as well as Mazdaism . They live mainly in the province of Nineveh in the north of Iraqi Kurdistan. Since 2014, they have been persecuted by the Islamic State, who regard them as devil worshippers.
