An aerial view of Copacabana's sidewalk (calçada) on Avenida Atlântica, originally based on a 19th century drawing by Pinheiro Furtado for Rossio Square in Lisbon. In its first iteration, the stones were imported from Portugal and 36 cobblers were sent from Lisbon in 1905. Avenida Atlântica was enlarged and renovated in the 1970s and landscape designer Roberto Burle Max was responsible for the redesign, which became the "largest example of applied art existing in the world." Due to his intervention the waves were given their current direction, becoming parallel to the sea. He divided the design into three horizontal strips, the section next to the shore with its distinctive wave pattern while the two parallel sections feature angular and organic shapes in black, white and red, interacting with the landscape and trees.
