Lviv train station witnesses tragic moments of civilian evacuation from Ukraine
LVIV, UKRAINE - MARCH 6: A number of people from across Ukraine have been making their ways to Lviv, where they hope to take a train to neighboring Poland in an effort to escape ongoing Russian attacks.
Footage shows long line of civilians waiting outside the train station before they could find a place on the train.
The station witnesses historic days of the country and emotional moments of the civilians as they leave their loved ones back home in the fight against Russia.
Lviv is about 70 kilometers (44 miles) from the border with Poland, and currently is a transfer point where lots of people gather to be evacuated to safer places.
The number of people fleeing Ukraine has been rising each day since Russia launched war on its neighbor on Feb. 24.
"More than 1.5 million refugees from Ukraine have crossed into neighbouring countries in 10 days — the fastest growing refugee crisis in Europe since World War II," Filippo Grandi, UN high commissioner for refugees, wrote on Twitter.
The number is rising steadily, up from 1.2 million as of Friday.
According to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) figures, as of March 5 at least 351 civilians have been killed and 707 others injured in Ukraine since Russia launched the war on its neighbor.
Among the 351 killed were 41 women and 22 children, according to the UN.
Last week, the European Commission proposed to grant temporary protection to all Ukrainian refugees with a right to residence, education, work, and social welfare.
The protection status would be valid for a year, with a possibility to extend twice for another six months depending on the situation in Ukraine. (Footage by Jaime Alekos/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
